Sunday Long Run Report

Things you shouldn't see on the last day of the year...around here anyway.

Had a great run today. I was a little skeptical about tapering and it's benefits, but I'm a believer. Sure, I feel rested, I expected that. What I didn't expect is how strong I feel. I haven't felt this good running for probably a few months. I guess that's the idea of this whole process.

Things I saw today that you just don't normally see on the last day of the year around here:
  • 4 Motorcyclists
  • 1 gentleman hitting golfballs at the driving range
  • 3 gentlemen playing a round of golf
  • 1 runner
The weather was amazing. Cool, but not cold. The 3 guys golfing stopped me to chat for a minute, they were blown away that I was out running 8 miles...until I told them my planned distance next week. Very nice fellas (they own the golf course) and I've golfed with the oldest of them before. The strangest thing I saw was someone else out running. I'm not some idiot that thinks I'm the only one around here that gets out and runs, it was just odd that on this back country road some lady goes past the other way, all geared up like I was. Little things like that make the run fun and interesting.

Sunday Long Run Report

Not happening

Just haven't felt good running lately, so I am skipping a run or two to get my legs back. I feel a little guilty only being 2 weeks from the race, but I am not worried about it. I have the miles in my legs. Just have to rest up.

Sunday Long Run Report

20 miles whether you like it or not

20 Miles. I knew it was coming eventually. I guess it snuck up a little bit. I didn't feel good and didn't want to run (sound familiar?). around 11:00am I figured if I didn't get going it would be dark before I finished, so I went. It wasn't easy but it wasn't so difficult either. I struggled, but enjoyed the struggle. 5 miles out and 5 miles back. I was standing in the kitchen refilling my water bottles and She Who Must Be Obeyed walked in. She asked me how it was going, and I said, I hurt and I think I'm gonna run 5 more and see how I feel. She said "No, you are running 5 out and 5 back again, you're 3 weeks away from 26.2 and you are going to do this." I wasn't terribly impressed with her suddenly putting her foot down on my running mileage, but she was very right. I had to go 5 out and back or I probably wouldn't have finished the run. She brought me some ice water around mile 14. Training for a marathon is hard to do. I believe it is at least twice as difficult when you have wife and kids, due to the time it takes away from them. I'm lucky to have such a great wife and kids.
Soooooo, today starts the taper. Goals for the taper: Drink nothing but water, Eat healthy breakfast and dinner every day, and 8 hours minimum of sleep per night, and get ALL my miles in.

Sunday long "run" report

14 miles of pain in the piggy bank. Can't wait to cash in. I hurt and didn't have a lot of motivation to go. But I did, and I'm glad I did. I know I'm on the uphill climb of training and will reach the peak this Saturday (or Sunday). And I know I've put a lot of burden on a body ill prepared to handle such burden. I'm proud of what I'm doing and trying to do. I don't expect anyone to understand why I'm doing it, mostly because I haven't really figured it out myself yet. Some people say, "why do it if you don't even have a chance of winning?" Others say, "why?" I've heard, "why don't you do a half marathon or something easier, or closer to home?" I'm not ashamed to admit that even today, I asked myself "why?" more than once.

Why? why? why?

Why not?

I learned a lot today. Any illusions I had about a marathon being easy were put to rest. (It's not that I ever thought it would be easy, I think maybe I just didn't have a firm respect for the distance and the sheer difficulty). 18 miles for an overweight old man new to running is absolutely tough. Ab. so. lute. ly. The big lesson I learned is that I really need to pay close attention to hydration and fueling.

Mile 9 was interesting, and my fastest mile, for good reason. Prarie doggin. And that's all I'm gonna say about that.

Ran through some real nice Amish farms today that I'd never seen before, and saw a lot of hunters along the road. Some had a good day, and some from our passing conversation hadn't seen anything.

Consumed: (6) Wild Cherry Clif Shot Bloks w/ caffeine. (2) Oatmeal Raisin Clif Bars. 16oz Crisp Apple Electrolyte Drink. 12oz Fruit Punch Gatorade. 22oz +/- Water.

Ice bath was an experience as always. Love 'em. They just work.

I'm so tired.

Sunday Long Run Report

Decorated for Christmas today, and watched the Stillers stink things up. We had a really beautiful day today, and I should have run while the temps were nicer, but sometimes, it's just too hard to get out the door. I waited until dark and ran in the cold. Yuck.

Nothing exciting to report. Felt good. 12 miles is a long way on the walkway. It's boring, but you don't have to worry about traffic or carrying hydration/food.

Speaking of....Consumed: (2) Clif Bars (Oatmeal Raisin (My Fav) and Chocolate Chip Peanut Crunch) (2) Clif Shot Bloks (Cran-Razz) (1) Clif Shot (Razz) and approx 22oz. water.

It's beginning to look a lot like Christmas.

Sunday Long Run Report

(Today's music in honor of TomCat)

Nothing special to report out on. Ran 16 miles at a nice slow pace, took an ice bath, and tonight I feel like maybe I never ran at all today. Sersly, I have no aches or pains. I did hurt the top of my foot a little bit, but I think it was just because of the new shoes and not having them laced tight enough. I stopped after a couple miles and tightened them, and the damage had already been done, but I don't think I made it any worse.

Oh, I ran sick also. I am not sure if it was the smartest move ever. I got a bad cough and some congestion. I guess we'll see. Recovery week coming up. Climbing to peak week with only 2 more long long runs left. Tick tock tick tock...

Consumed (2) Clif Bars (Chocolate Chip peanut Crunch - Meh and Oatmeal Raisin - YUM!) (4 or 5) Clif Shot Bloks (Cran-Razz - Not bad) Approx 16 oz of diluted Gatorade and 30 oz of water.

New Shoes

I went to the Dr's this morning. He determined that I have a mild case of Achilles Tendinitis and prescribed an anti-inflammatory and PT. He said I should reduce my training for the time being also. But he added after he said that, that his running patients are the least compliant patients, and rarely take his advice on training. He did give me some heel riser pads for my shoes.

After the dr. visit we went to Endurance Athletics in Altoona. Lisa was great and extremely helpful in getting me just the right shoes. I ended up with a pair of Brooks Radius 6. I also picked up a Fuel Belt and Lisa threw in a free Clif Shot and Clif Shot Blok and a few sample packs of Sport Shield and Blister Shield. Holy Smokes! What a great little store! I actually learned a lot about the different types of running shoes (stability, cushioning, motion control, etc.)

So I got home and went out to try the new shoes out. Slight drizzle, but it was actually a pretty warm, comfortable night for running. We had a lot of rain today and I had heard a few flash flood warnings, so I was a little concerned when the creek that parallels the walkway path was running fast and only about 2-3 feet below the walkway (It's usually 10-15 feet below). 5 miles into the run the bottom dropped out of the sky and don't think I've ever been out in rain that heavy. It was sheeting off of my head and running into my eyes so much that I couldn't see for a while and actually ran off the 3' wide path twice. I suppose I should have stuck it out for the last 2 miles of the run, but the rain was beyond ridiculous, so even though I knew I'd regret giving in....I did. And I regret it. I feel like I failed an easy mental test tonight. I suppose I could say I was following dr's orders and backing off a bit, but I think I need to remember the sting of this one.

Saturday Long Run Reeeeeport

It was a beautiful day. I forgot how much I like running in the morning before anyone is even up and around. Miles 12 - 14 were teh suxor. Probably because I was back on the walkway (Thankfully it started raining a bit, that was nice).

Note: Since as far as I know, my brother is the only person that reads this regularly, the following route description will only make sense to him (I doubt it will even make sense to him).

My route went 1/4 mile down walkway, down Maple Avenue past the school, past Lezzers, back down the walkway, 1 lap around the high school track (Can you tell I was just wingin it and running wherever my feet took me?) (At this point I was a bit distracted by the police and firemen extracting a car from being wrapped around a traffic signal pole after it had caught fire...rubberneck) Up past the Harley Shop past the old green house, down past Kohlepps and out to the sewage treatment plant (Hi-dee-ho Coach! I'm giving it 110%! (He'd be proud)). Over the train tracks and 1 lap around Triangle Tech's parking lot. I backtracked all the way back to Kohlepps and then went down past the YMCA and back to the walkway. 1 Lap on the walkway and I was done. Here is a link to the route: Gmap

Consumed (1) Power Bar (Chocolate Peanut Crunch - quite good) and (1) Clif Bar (Oatmeal Raisin - YUM!) Approx 20 oz of Gatorade and 20 oz of water.

AT felt ok. Still not feeling great but at least I can run. After I got back I took a 20 minute ice bath. WOOHOO fun. Actually it wasn't as bad as it was scary at first. After the 1st minute everything goes numb. It seersly helps with the sore legs.

Movie Monday

For the level of condition that I have now, that was without a doubt the hardest physical thing I have ever done...
I never felt a point where I hit the wall. It was really a gradual progression of fatigue and soreness.
I think I bit off more than I could chew. I thought the marathon would be easier...
(My shins) started to hurt in the second half, especially the right one. I could barely walk up here, because the calves are completely knotted up.

Saturday Long Run Report

What a wonderfully freezing cold day! Comm, Shelly, Nancy Toby, Bold, Kahuna, Tridaddy, Trimama, Robostu, I was thinking about these guys/gals for the whole run, and what an inspiration they have been. Just imagining the trials they were dealing with today made my 10 miler seem soooo insignificant, and helped me breeze through. I've been glued to Ironman Live all afternoon.

Saturday Long Run Report

I did a few more miles than I expected to today. Felt ok. I would have run 6.5 out, but at 5.5 the wind was just about knocking me off the road and the rain was starting to sting my face, and it was hilly and my ankle started twitching (it never pinched which was good). and...and... I can come up with reasons all day. I turned around and headed back, and figured I'd run a 2 mile loop in Sykesville to make up fo it and try to get the 13 because I felt better the closer I got to home....for a while anyway. At mile 11.5 I was praying for the angels to come take me home...look up and there's Missi! Hahahaha. I took it as a sign. I don't feel bad about not getting the 13 in. I won more battles today than I expected too just getting out and going. Confidence was low at the start of the run.

AT feels better today than it did Thursday evening. Knock on wood.

Turned the ipod to play ALL songs...sort of a pot luck kind of day. Right around mile 10, I think she knew we were struggling, so out of the 3900+ songs she had to choose from for me, she choose the Rocky Theme Song. Bah bah baaaah bummmmm. Bapa bapa bummmmm.... Yeah, you know the tune now. I giggled, and smiled for the whole song.

Movie Monday

I was out running for most of the game, and missed this. I guess I kind of found it a bit funny, I mean, the tackle is legit, but come on, picking him up by his hair? Oh well, it looked like Troy didn't even really care anyway. I'm sure Missi and Roni would have been upset if they saw it happen to their hero.

Sunday Long Run Report

I don't have anything to say good or bad about my run today. The weather is getting colder and I guess I don't mind it so much. I raked about 10 wheel barrow loads of porkypines (pine tree needles) out of my yard this weekend, and started burning them. The house smelt like smoke all night. Did the last mowing (hopefully) of the year and cleaned up the mower, and found a dead mouse in the engine. This, after half way through mowing, I stopped and chased a live mouse out of the mower with a stick. They are welcome to spend the winter under my mower as long as they don't start eyeing up the house.

Been listening to Simply Stu and really enjoying some of his earlier Interview Series. I am trying real hard not to even think about possible triathalons, need to get over this first hill.

Back on the wagon

After a week off, it felt good to get back out today and test the AT. I ran hard and didn't have any problems. Looking forward to 88 more days of good, healthy, injury free training.

Getting the thumbs up today:

Axe body wash - Recovery
It smells and looks like lemon-lime gatorade to me. An obvious choice for any runner.

Getting the thumbs down:

Sunday Long Run Report

The Sunday Long Run Report will from now on be moved to Saturdays, which is when I will now perform all long runs. Except that I don't think I'll be running much for a while. I ran yesterday, but too lazy and mad to report out until today. I don't know what is wrong with my achilles. I guess I had better lay off of it and get it 100% before I think about much of anything else. I was stupid to run yesterday but felt fine until mile 8 of 9. Other than that it was a nice run and a really great 35 degree rainy day, what wasn't there to love? I won't complain about the weather, because soon enough, I'll be wishing for 35 and rainy.

This will happen....it will.

Sunday Long Run Report

My AT feels like it is bruised. I had a step back week scheduled this week, so I'm going to step back by just not running at all for a few days and see if I can get it feeling better. I'm thinking about getting some 1/4" heel raises for my shoes and seeing if that does anything. I also changed my training plan to a slightly easier (or so it would seem) one. Hopefully that will relieve some of the overuse issues I seem to be having. I'm a little bummed that I keep hurting, but I am not going to let it keep me from trying.

On a lighter note, I picked up a free (yes, free) Huffy Flatbed freestyle bike from the neighbors junk heap he had out in the front yard. It is now my little project, to see if I can restore it, and make it something presentable. I'm not sure what I should call it...Jefferson County Choppers sounds catchy. I stripped the whole thing down to the frame and fork. I just have to take the head set and stem off of it. It had one-piece cranks on it, and I've never taken those apart before, although I had an idea that it wouldn't be too difficult, and it wasn't, so I learned a little bit there. I am thinking about taking the frame, fork, handle bars, seat post, and rims to a local business that does powder coating and having them strip it down and apply a black powder coat. Have to call and see how much $ that would be. I think I'll post some pics later on just to chronicle the life of this thing. It will probably take me years to get anywhere with it, but oh well, it is something to do. And I have a good helper. Roo was peeling stickers for about 30 seconds with me, until she got bored and decided to ride her tricycle around the garage.

Root root root for the home team

Nothing terribly exciting to report this week. I missed my run on Wednesday because my blisters hurt, and I wanted to give them a break (good one, huh?). Also, it was raining pretty heavy (not bad, not bad). So I am trying to catch up a little at the end of the week here, and I think I'll still get my miles for the week in, and not overdo it.

I am not the kind of person that puts a lot of value on what other people think of me, although I do try to stay under the radar and not draw attention. Tonight I drove down to the local ballfield and parked the truck and started my run. I was wearing black wind pants and a blaze orange under armour tee shirt. Not a big deal and not terribly conspicuous. Or so I thought. While I was out on my run, apparently the local midget football (is it still ok to call it that?) team showed up for practice. Their uniforms are black pants and orange shirts. I'm sure nobody noticed me (yeah, right) covered in sweat and ducking into the truck as quickly as I could to get out of there. I felt like a big dorky male cheerleader (not that there's anything wrong with that), or maybe an overzealous fan. Now I know how women feel when they show up to a party and see someone else wearing the same dress. Go Leopards!

Tuesday, September 19, 2006

Owwwwww!

Roo was so excited to show me her new iPod when I got home today. It came preloaded with a bunch of 50-Cent and 80's hair bands. Go figure.

Oh yeah, I got a blister a mile and a half into my 6 mile run today. Sheesh.

Snakes on the run...

I absolutely hate snakes. I don't care if they are just a couple inches long or big enough to eat a small donkey, they are all spawns of Satan. I must have been about 4-6 miles in today when I nearly stepped on one sunning itself along the Walkway. I had my head down and didn't see it till I was right on top of it, and when I did my heart leapt into my throat, but luckily I had already jumped up in the air so high, it didn't cause any damage. Scared the snake just as bad as it scared me. I nearly had to take a potty break in the woods after that, and I might of if I didn't think there were probably 50 more in there waiting for me (along with a few ninjas).

I have to post my splits from today, because, although I wanted to start out slower today, I was feeling so good, I couldn't help myself but run, and I knew I would pay for it by the end. And I did.

1 - 12:27.8
2 - 12:10.0 (I never run the 2nd mile faster than the first)
3 - 11:42.3 (Slow down dummy)
4 - 12:57.8
5 - 12:32.0
6 - 12:27.9
7 - 13:52.2 (That's where I should have probably been all day, maybe a little quicker)
8 - 12:39.8
9 - 13:04.0
10 - 13:34.3
11 - 13:51.7 (Fading)
12 - 18:32.2 (Nice walk, skirt getting in the way?)

Playlist:

I won't list the songs but I started out with Sugarcult, and Finished up with Blue Oyster Cult, YEAH Baby! BOC!!! I love "Counting Stars" by Sugarcult so much it made the song of the day (I need a better name for that...any suggestions?). I was going to put COBRA STARSHIP - Snakes on a Plane up there, but it features my boy Sam Jackson dropping the "MF" bomb at the beginning, and I was worried my MIL might read this some day and that wouldn't go over good with her (or my lovely wife for that matter). Ah who am I kidding the wife would probably giggle.

Spazzed out...

I'm 2 miles into my 4 mile run today, and I'm just about ready to turn around and head home, there is a vehicle on the road coming toward me. I have no idea what happened next but something hits me right in the face, that little crease right beside my left nostril, above my lip. I don't know if it was a bee, a walnut falling out of a tree or some ninja up in the woods throwing one of them ninja stars at me (it felt like the latter). Suddenly I turn into a 3 year old girl with tourettes. It stopped me dead in my tracks. I can only imagine what the people in the oncoming vehicle were thinking, and I'm not sure why they didn't stop. Well, yes I am, they were probably scared to death of the mental patient on the side of the road screaming and dancing around swinging at his face like he was on fire. The whole side of my face went numb and my eye started throbbing. There wasn't really anything I could do, so I turned around and kept running, just sure that blood would start pouring any second. I made it back to the truck without passing out, and looked in the mirror and I can't even find a mark. Them ninjas are amazing.

Here are my splits for the run:

1 - 11:04.5
2 - 11:02.2
3 - 11:54.0 (Hey I was hurting)
4 - 10:27.9 (Convinced I was going to need medical attention)

Around the track came No. 9

I ran the train tracks today and it sucked. I should have known it would suck, but I wanted to explore them just to see if it could be done. It would be wonderful to run along the tracks all day and only ever have to deal with an occasional traffic intersection. I think I`ll stick to the roads for now though.

Sunday

Pushed the bar to 10 Miles today. It was difficult, but I have learned to take my long runs a little bit easier and I get through them just fine. I'm kind of glad I didn't run the Erie Half Marathon today, as 10 was pushing the limits.

Listened to Linkin Park again because I had so much fun with them last run. It was ok, but after a while they make the ears ring a little. Too many tracks to list (2 hour 13 minute run).

Today is the official start of my Marathon Training Program. Whoop de dooo. I am going to try and really focus on hitting my weekly mileage. I don't want this to hurt, and I want it to be an enjoyable experience that I might want to undertake again some day.

I love my new shoes....

Ludacris Park

Playlist:

[deleted] (doesn't matter anyway, nothing good for me there)

Breaking The Habit (Live) - Linkin Park - Underground V4.0
The crowd noise and crowd participation on this track did more for me than the actual song.
A Place For My Head - Linkin Park - Underground V3.0
Great track for some speed. This was the last one I listened to on the home stretch, and it had me goin.

remodeling...

I am making a few changes to the bLog. You may have already noticed the new Stat thingys on the left side. Also the countdown timer....tick, tick, ticking away. I am also not going to post workout stats in posts any longer as the Buckeye Outdoors tracker does a decent job of that.
