New Shoes
I went to the Dr's this morning. He determined that I have a mild case of Achilles Tendinitis and prescribed an anti-inflammatory and PT. He said I should reduce my training for the time being also. But he added after he said that, that his running patients are the least compliant patients, and rarely take his advice on training. He did give me some heel riser pads for my shoes.
After the dr. visit we went to Endurance Athletics in Altoona. Lisa was great and extremely helpful in getting me just the right shoes. I ended up with a pair of Brooks Radius 6. I also picked up a Fuel Belt and Lisa threw in a free Clif Shot and Clif Shot Blok and a few sample packs of Sport Shield and Blister Shield. Holy Smokes! What a great little store! I actually learned a lot about the different types of running shoes (stability, cushioning, motion control, etc.)
So I got home and went out to try the new shoes out. Slight drizzle, but it was actually a pretty warm, comfortable night for running. We had a lot of rain today and I had heard a few flash flood warnings, so I was a little concerned when the creek that parallels the walkway path was running fast and only about 2-3 feet below the walkway (It's usually 10-15 feet below). 5 miles into the run the bottom dropped out of the sky and don't think I've ever been out in rain that heavy. It was sheeting off of my head and running into my eyes so much that I couldn't see for a while and actually ran off the 3' wide path twice. I suppose I should have stuck it out for the last 2 miles of the run, but the rain was beyond ridiculous, so even though I knew I'd regret giving in....I did. And I regret it. I feel like I failed an easy mental test tonight. I suppose I could say I was following dr's orders and backing off a bit, but I think I need to remember the sting of this one.
